Has Mozilla Got It Backwards?

Wrong end, I think Mozilla should concentrate on developing a server suite, especially now that they're getting some big money backing. As the “big money”, Google for instance, actually has capability to run the servers and handle the load. It should be the server, not the client, responsible for interoperating and keeping up with 101 different IM protocols out in the wild.

To this end, with some fine tuning and further extensions, the Extensible Messaging and Presence Protocol (XMPP) should fit the bill quite nicely. It's capable of handling most communication needs, mail, IM, voice over IP, etc.

This allows developers, both open source and private, to concentrate on a single protocol and greatly simplifies the task at hand. It allows various software packages to seamlessly fit together and makes it easier for different projects to collaborate. This is especially important in the open source world as everything doesn't always work nicely with everything else, at least not easily. In the long run, making the Linux experience more like the Microsoft experience is in “big money's” best interest.
