IT futures Hype

Sorry but after 30 years in the IT industry watching the likes of IBM and Microsoft trying to predict the future I have a very jaundiced view. Just because technology makes something possible doesn't mean that people will use it. Phones today are bristling with features but most people just talk and text. Interactive TV and Video on Demand have been relaunched at least twice and no one is really interested. Remember the paperless office, Microsoft Learning Technology , WebTV. IBM's speech recognition systems. The Rabbit phone etc etc etc
New things that are accepted as good ideas come from new companies and not from the likes of Microsoft. No one predicted the Google model, It's about company culture and how existing companies stifle innovation without even trying. there will be lots of new things in the future but you won't learn about them by listening to IT salesmen.
