Story: Home Office laptop and disc 'bought on eBay'

Could have been worse.

The article gives the impression that encryption actually saved the day!

The luck is not that the disc and laptop were encrypted, the luck is the fact that they fell into the hands of the wrong thief. this was just a petty crook looking for a few bucks on ebay; ignoring the fact that he can and will get tracked down.
Had it been someone more safisticated, their focus would have been the data not the hardware, its not unheard of for encryptions to be broken.
