Story: Ballmer pledges 'last breath' to catching Google up
Well...
It's more the mission that it seems to have, "Take over the world," that is the problem. After all, the average sentient human being generally realizes that there will always be someone dumber/brighter than them no matter what they do, and secure in that knowledge life goes on for them.
However, Microsoft pretty much seems to have as its entire being the belief that only it can produce the best software and anything else is an aberration that must be "corrected." You've just got to show a Microserf something way cool that Microsoft didn't do and their universal reaction is, "But Microsoft can and will do that better." Not like in a competitive sense, more of a disbelief that someone else deigns to write software that is in any way something significant.
