Thunderbird: A handy data transfer tool

Although you pray that some situations never happen, inevitably they will at some point occur.

As a hardware technician I would often be doing data transfers from an old machine to a new one.

I can guarantee 2/5 people would say can you transfer my Outlook files (I’m thinking great fun!), and 1/10 of those people say “By the way I’m using Outlook on Windows 95 and my new PC has Outlook 2007” (Now I have shivers running down my spine).

See the chances are that our good friends at Microsoft in their infinite wisdom couldn’t possibly create one of their new products to work seamlessly with an old one. Heaven forbid the transfer of data would be easy!

If it were one of my lucky days and the versions were not too far apart I may get away with minimal pain of making the old data work on the new Version of Outlook.

If I was unlucky I would enlist the help of Thunderbird, 9/10 it would understand the old data and put it in to a format that the new version of Outlook could understand.

And that is why Thunderbird is good as a handy data transfer tool, though I haven’t actually used it as an email client.
