A Change of Direction ....

"Or will this be an alternative OS, and one that actually works with all the other software on the planet."

.... No, not now, not ever. M$ devote a huge effort to maintain and extend the lockin/lockout situation and maintain/extend our dependance on M$ software. The culture is deeply and inexorably embedded in their business model.

Perhaps, in the not immediate future, things will change, but not if M$ can help it. After all they have deep pockets, using our money - yours and mine, that is, and they will obviously seek to continue their dominance.

M$ will weather the storm generated by the relative unpopularity of Vista. However, I see that their future products will unreasonably drive requirements for ever more sophisticated hardware which is hardly ecologically friendly in these days of climate change fears. Perhaps this will open the way for Linux with it's ability to run similar tasks reliably and effectively on less sophisticated hardware.
