Perennial or Hardy Annual?

This one comes up so often it's getting to be a joke.

Frankly I think you were lucky to get results as good as you did. The real-world situation of washing machines with worn commutators and arcing sequencers, ancient vacuum cleaners with no suppression, wall-plate light switches with no fast action (how they ever got approved is beyond me. The 1940s ceramic ones were much better) all conspire against sending anything sensible down the power lead. If you're ever bored enough, try hooking a 'scope on the supply and see what it looks like - The Penines comes to mind.

When all motors are brushless AC and all switches are zero-crossing solid state, things will be much better - I'm not holding my breath.
