Virtualisation Toolkit
Story: The cloud's not ready for desktop virtualisation
Great Leap to the Past
Virtualization is a great leap to the past. Virtualization was created for mainframe computers. The virtualization of datacenter servers was/is a creative way to cut power and real-estate and serves well for disaster recovery. Virtualizing the desktop? Hmmm the case isn't nearly as strong for hosting the user's apps on a MAINFRAME (whether a traditional one or a distributed MAINFRAME, i.e. server farm) The whole point of distributed computing was and continues to be gaining the computing power of multiple machines. Data center people should remember their mission: Serving the corporation's USERS for the benefit of the enterprise. Despite efforts to overcome datacenter down time, there are times when I am very glad that I have tools and files on my PC when the network goes down or is overloaded.
Desktop virtualization? No thank you, I think I remain separate from the collective to the extent that I can.
