Story: Gov't U-turns on compulsory ID cards for pilots
Grey Army
I love the idea that the over 75s will leap at the chance to get their free ID card. In talking to people and campaigning against these things, it's that very age group that need no persuading. They had ID cards during the war or their parents did, and they can remember how divisive they became. They also remember how liberating it was to be able to tear them up when they were finally dumped.
To quote one venerable old boy who was perfectly lucent on the subject: "ID cards are for wars. They go hand in hand with dragging people off the street in irons if they don't have one. In those days, if you didn't have an ID card, you were a fifth columnist and you got shot."
I think the new Home Sec might find take up a little disappointing ;-)
