Story: Ten reasons Windows 7 could flop

Enough already

If Linux was mature enough for the mainstream and compatible with the zillions of apps everyday people take for granted, then linux adoption would be impressive, but it remains and I feel for a long time yet, a hobbyist OS with too much technical skill required for the average home user to adopt.

It is good, I use Ubuntu 9.10, Windows 7 and Windows XP (dual boot), and personally prefer the performance benefit of Ubuntu 9.10, but Windows compatibility wins every time, plus as a developer I cannot ignore the fact that I am heavily invested in MS dev technologies.

The way forward, is converge all the forked versions of Linux (far too confusing for the masses), improve OpenOffice to be 100% compatible, (big losers here are VBA Excel macros and Access compatibility) and have (like MS) different flavours, but simplified, Netbook Lite version, Desktop version and Server (Ent) version and standardise the Desktop. Merge Gnome/KDE and create one standard OS platform with app compatbility across the board. Once Mono is finally there, the enterprise have a real alternative.

Then we have a real contender!
