Story: Ten reasons Windows 7 could flop
Ease the adoption pain...
I actually prefer linux in many ways....The emphasis here is to keep it simple.
Technical/pro users are comfortable with technology but these aren't the real market, yet Linux, to the majority is exactly, that, still perceived as a hobbyist/techy OS.
The real market is the millions of domestic users who aren't tech savvy and need a simple choice and confidence in making it.
With so many variations (forks) of linux distros out their, consumers cannot decide, how would they? so they ultimately fall back to their existing option
Unless they buy a pc i.e. netbook pre-installed with a linux distro (Linpus Lite, UNR, Moblin...) they probably wouldn't choose linux at all.
Consumers love the words "free" or "cheaper", but they will also avoid confusion and uncertainty, which leads to skepticism, and ultimately another potential convert shying away.
I have tried to suggest Linux to many people, but they all say the same thing..."I will stick to what I know!", the image is the problem, not the technology.
I would say that Ubuntu is leading the way here, and maybe the community should concentrate their efforts towards that ONE real alternative and then we could see a sea-change in the perception.
Until then Microsoft will continue to dominate the market with their marketing. "I am a PC and I'm 8 years old", makes quite a compelling argument....
