Sale of public assets

This point was raised at the conference, and Mandelson seemed to think that the £16bn sale of public assets such as the Dartford crossing would provide the government with some cash.

"I don't know why the Dartford crossing is supposed to operate better if it's owned by the government," said Mandelson.

The Dartford Tunnel is a monopoly, so the supposed benefits of privatisation i.e. lower prices, greater choice, won't apply.

Incidentally, since the privatisation of many industries, e.g. of the railway system, has anyone noticed any drop in prices or improved service? No? Thought not.
