Apple Mac OS X On X86: A First Test

Talkback I boot my Mac very seldom, there is usually no need to but installing OS updates. Both boot performance and application startup are sensitive to hard drive speed, faster drives, faster times. And the complaint about boot time, totally irrelevant.

Protecting Yourself From The MSBlast Worm

Talkback Can this be so or is it something else that's continually causing my PC to re-boot? I have Windows '98 but seem to have all the symptoms of the Blaster virus! Switch it on, get to the desktop and it re-boots about 5-6 times, sometimes it doesn't...

Vista SP1 - One Week Update

Blog First, since installing Vista SP1 I have had no boot problems or failures, which I had at least twice with the original Vista installation. Not only that, but Vista seems to boot a bit faster than it did before SP1, and it certainly suspends and...

A Week Working With Linux

Blog I was very curious as to how many times during the week I would "have to" boot Windows. As I have mentioned previously, I have my primary laptop set up to multi-boot Windows XP Professional, Ubuntu or Mandriva, so it is just as easy for me to boot...

Jesse Berst: "IT's Like This..."

News Microsoft recently contacted OEMs about possible changes in first-boot licensing terms. I'm no lawyer, but those scraps don't sound like the makings of a settlement to me. Having gotten into trouble with the judge so many times before, Microsoft...

Mandriva Linux - Wonderful And Maddening

Blog It is the only one so far which recognized the Ubuntu partition on the drive, and added it to the boot list. After installation, it booted from the hard drive with the aforementioned boot list (Mandriva/Ubuntu/XP).

Windows 98: Customers Complain Early And Often

News This time, after the final boot sequence, the system simply hung, right after the SCSI BIOS reported 'loading boot record from SCSI. Granted, I have an older (Pentium 200 Micron) PC - but a clean install to a brand new (Seagate Medalist) hard drive...

SP1 All Pluses

SP1 all pluses image Member Review From taking anything up to a minute to find and connect to my home or office wifi it now takes less than 3 seconds and if you are connecting from boot up it is usually connected before you system can even display the network icon in the taskbar

SP2 To Be Forced Out

Talkback I had to boot from CD and then un-install SP2. Finally, my machine refused to boot - even from CD. I intended to forget SP2 and did so for a few weeks, but somehow SP2 had damaged my system and it kept crashing.

Linux On A Pentium III - The Adventure

News So, I had to reboot into Windows and download a fresh copy of FIPS, a process that sounds worse than it is given that with "fast boot" enabled in the Micron's BIOS it boots Windows98 in something short of 20 seconds.

Ubuntu 7.10 Gibbon Swings On The Asus Eee

Blog First problem: although the BIOS spotted the USB external CD-ROM, and would let us select it first in the boot order, it refused to actually boot from it first, choosing instead to revert to the trashed internal flash drive.

Apple Mac OS X On X86: A First Test

Talkback Application startup times and boot time were also dismal compared to my similarly spec'd PC. I bought a mini mac to check out OS X but i found that it was much more limiting to work with than Windows.

Rupert Goodwins' Diary

Blog He has every precision time standard that HP ever made, and a few hundred other sundry items to boot. And he got most of this stuff from boot sales, eBay, government surplus auctions and specialist second-hand dealers: "you can build up quite a...

Tuesday

Blog Apparently, some unknown agent of chaos has written lots of nonsense on the computer's hard disk -- including, I discover when I restart -- the boot sector. I say a very rude word several times, loudly.

Vista Vs. XP: The Final Retreat

Blog Then it made a fresh boot, did a lot more thrashing around on the disk, asked me if I wanted to boot normal, safe mode or whatever, and then finally came up again. When I boot Vista, the memory meter shows 38% memory in use (of a total of 3 GB).

Photos: Toshiba Launches World's Lightest Laptop

News Toshiba claims that SSDs are more resilient to shock and vibration, more power efficient, and have faster boot-up times than conventional hard drives. I could fill the balloon basket with manuals of navigation data but I can store all that on this...

Gates Takes A Side-swipe At Apple, Linux Security

Talkback I guess its ok (but dissapointing) for Billy to say "Hackers are good for the maturity of our systems" but what about those who just have a single computer that can't boot-up, cant System-Resore and cant be re-booted from Disk because some weirdo...

A Challenge To All Linux Users In The World

Blog Comment Dual boot if you must for gaming or the few other things better done on a Windows box, but make the switch to GNU/Linux. I didn't have any trouble the several times I installed it. But raid is not a good back-up choice.

Have Apple Got It Wrong With The IPhone?

Blog Comment However, you neglect to consider the iPhone has 500MBs of desktop-class Unix-based OS X on some pretty high performance hardware compared to the ~50MB of Windows Mobile, Symbian etc with a far more robust and easy to use software update mechanism...
