Tiny pipes deliver the big chill

News This development could lead to smaller and more efficient notebook computers as engineers and designers eliminate the space needed to house bulky and noisy fan cooling systems. Typical laptops contain a heat sink -- a plate of metal across the...

CPU Frequency Scaling

Blog In fact, running the CPU at a lower speed not only saves power, it reduces the heat production, which reduces the need for the cooling fan to run, saving even more power, and making the laptop itself feel less "hot" or "warm" to the touch (or to...

Fix noisy computer fans with a drop of oil

News The reason that you shouldn't use WD-40 on a computer fan is that while it is indeed a lubricant it's mainly designed as a cleaner/degreaser, that loosens stuck parts, prevents corrosion, and displaces water-obviously not the types of problems...

Nvidia courts gamers with high-end chip

News The new Nvidia chip also eliminates one of the least-admired aspects of the 5800: the big, noisy cooling fan that the chip required. Steve Sims, senior product manager for Nvidia, said the 5900 uses a cooling system based on Nvidia's workstation...

Keep your PC quiet review

Reviews The system also included a chassis fan supplying general in-case cooling, with further fans on both the CPU heatsink and on the nVidia graphics adapter. At home, you’re more likely to be distracted and annoyed by another contributory factor to...

Nvidia GeForce FX 5900: a first look review

Reviews For starters, the 5900 loses the 5800's gigantic, noisy cooling fan; instead, it uses a new cooling system that increases airflow while drastically reducing fan noise. At the annual E3 gaming industry conference in Los Angeles, Nvidia has unveiled...

Seagate BlackArmor NAS 440 review

Reviews Also, it's the first NAS server we've seen that lets you replace its cooling fan. The BlackArmor's cooling fan is user-replaceable, which is unusual. Considering its large size, the BlackArmor's fan is surprisingly quiet.

Your biggest fan review

Reviews Water cooling replaces the heatsink and fan traditionally attached to your CPU with a waterblock -- a plate to which you plumb a fluid line. His CPUs don't have as many transistors or as high a density as the electronics in today's machines and...

How to make your PCs quieter

News To combat this issue, PC Power & Cooling makes an excellent low-noise case fan. Companies such as Koolance are trying to widen the acceptance of water cooling by providing computer cases with prebuilt water-cooling solutions.

Pentium 4: Too hot to handle?

News These machines, weighing in at 5.5 pounds and more, generally offer better cooling capacity and extra space for larger batteries, when compared with notebooks that weigh four pounds or less. By comparison, Intel's 1.2GHz Pentium III-M thermal...

Fix noisy computer fans with a drop of oil

Talkback I was looking through cooling fan adverts to replace two noisy fans and came across this item on how to oil them. I was a little cynical at first but decided to try it which was a very simple job with the instructions supplied and guess what ?

Run, don't walk away from Dell!

Run, don't walk away from Dell! image Member Review The fan cooling (actually, the "lack of" cooling system) is a major problem. Read all reviews carefully before buying a Dell Inspiron 5100! Even worse is the need to replace the motherboard in such a short period of time.

Fix noisy computer fans with a drop of oil

Talkback I first cleaned out the dust and then oiled the main cooling fan as indicated. Also at that time i thought the fan on the PNY GeForce Fx5200 graphics card could be making the noise. I removed the card, then its independent fan, and oiled it.

Hitachi Performa CP-RS55 review

Reviews Another traditional LCD drawback inherited by the CP-RS55 is the need for regular cleaning of the cooling fan's air filter. This model also runs quite cool; we noticed some warm areas near its fan exhaust, but nothing that was uncomfortably hot.
