Ecma's history with Sun...

Blog I don't have good network bandwidth today, so I'll just pass on another link: nearly ten years ago, it seems Sun regarded Ecma as "accommodating" for its standards publishing requirements.http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m0CGN...

Ecma: So why is our process suddenly broken?

Blog The standard maker Ecma has responded to the harsh criticism it's had from within IBM, among other places. Essentially, people objecting to Ecma's fast track standard process are actually complaining about a particular standard, not the process...

Ecma: So why is our process suddenly broken?

Blog Comment ECMA has said the process was not bought, because it "did not receive a penny". That's a good point. That doesn't mean it wasn't bought - just that the costs went elsewhere.

OOXML debacle - time to take away ECMA's toys?

Blog Comment Judge, OOXML is neither a "debacle" nor is the ISO/IEC Fast Track procedure Ecma's "toy". Ecma is a well respected standardization body with a long history. If you want to find out more about it and its present and past standards please visit the...

ECMA move is standard fare from Microsoft

Leader To take its own XML file format down the standards route, via ECMA. In the meantime, the biggest mistake we could make is to think that Microsoft's approach to ECMA will render OpenDocument obsolete. One of the reasons that the Department of...

Ecma: So why is our process suddenly broken?

Blog Comment For Ecma to say "there hasn't been anything wrong with this process before" is rather like the farmer whose mule fell over dead in the field, and he then said "strange, he's never done that before".jw 25/9/2008

OOXML debacle - time to take away ECMA's toys?

Blog Comment I am aware of ECMA's history, lake100 - I covered it fairly extensively, 15 years ago, along with other standards bodies. ECMA has indeed produced good work on areas including DVD and tape standards (I'm not sure whehter a standard implemented in...

OOXML debacle - time to take away ECMA's toys?

Blog There's one thing that comes across over and over again in the latest responses to the ODF/OOXML document wars, and that is a deep distrust of ECMA. Originally known as the European Computer Manfucturers' Association, ECMA is 46 years old, and has...

ECMA move is standard fare from Microsoft

Talkback Can't trust Microsoft on this one. There are too many variables and too many subtle ways they can pollute their supposed future "open standard" to continue tilting things in their own favor. I'd give it at least 1 - 2 years of implementation (by...

ECMA move is standard fare from Microsoft

Talkback I guess end users have had enough of incompatible formats across versions from MS. The trivial "upgrade" of a version format has happened in most of the Office releases since Word 1 - and end users have had enough or engineered incompatibility

OOXML debacle - time to take away ECMA's toys?
