OOXML debacle - time to take away ECMA's toys?

Blog Comment Judge, OOXML is neither a "debacle" nor is the ISO/IEC Fast Track procedure Ecma's "toy". Regarding Ecma's history and its A-Liaison status with ISO/IEC JTC 1 please read Mr. In short ISO and Ecma have been working together from the very beginning...

ISO Credibility

Talkback Think about why it is that both Ecma and OASIS sought to have their format proposals approved by ISO? What do ISO and the W3C have that Ecma and OASIS do not? Here's the interesting point about Ecma and OASIS that truly differentiates the vendor...

Ecma: So why is our process suddenly broken?

Blog The "PAS" process by which Ecma submits standards to ISO for fast-track approval has been working well since 1961, he says in an email. Generally, on the rules and procedures in every standards body (Ecma, ISO, ITU,.there is a constant refinement...

Actually MS Office 2007 complies with official Ecma standard

Talkback Soon there might be a new version of ISO OOXML and that is then likely to become the new Ecma 376 version as well. The ISO version will probably become Ecma 376 v1.1. For OOXML the maintenance will be done by Ecma and ISO together.

Evolution indeed

Talkback Actually the current Ecma 376 standaard is already higly compliant to the upcoming ISO standard of Office Open XML. In a previous validation test of an existing Ecma 376 document against the not yet released ISO transitional schema's, for a many...

Cut to the chase

Talkback The trick for vendor consortia is getting their Ecma-OASIS ZERO interop proposals through ISO/IEC, where interoperability requirements rule and governments, not vendors, are tasked with the measure. Shutting that door on Ecma OOXML is proving very...

Standardization by Corporation

Talkback That they use this influence to limit interoperability at the expense of application and system specific vendor innovation is an allegation the vendors will no doubt contest with great vigor exactly because it goes to the heart of the matter...

The point is that OOXML should not have been Fast Tracked.

Talkback The problem with OOXML was that it had not been seriously reviewed by a standard organisation, was huge and far from stable, and had not a single implementation released when it was send to ISO by Ecma for the Fast Track process.

OOXML debacle - time to take away ECMA's toys?

Blog Originally known as the European Computer Manfucturers' Association, ECMA is 46 years old, and has had a "fast track" arrangement with the international standards body, ISO for more than 20 years. But ECMA, for some reason, has the same status as a...

IBM warns standards bodies to shape up

News Supporters of the rival ODF document standard alleged that national bodies had been stacked with Microsoft supporters, and objected to the fast-track process by which another body, ECMA, submitted OOXML to ISO.

[September 23, 2008, 16:03]

Actually its an IBM Witch Hunt and you should get your facts right!

Talkback OXML as you know was developed at Ecma and therefore would come into ISO under the Fast Track process. OXML is in the ISO Fast Track because it was not developed at ISO, but rather at Ecma. Your implication that Ecma and\or MS are trying to rush...

Critics brand OOXML a Microsoft 'marketing tool'

News It's, at best, a tutorial and user's guide for people who want to build products around Office, and neither the Ecma nor the ISO process did anything to turn it into a specification. On 2 April, Microsoft's OOXML standard, which had previously been...
