Ubuntu Netbook Remix "Acid Test" - Wrap-Up

Blog Time to wrap up one more open item - my informal "Acid Test" of UNR. UNR installed and worked flawlessly, and my neighbor has been using it happily ever since. There was a minor problem that required changing one BIOS setting, but once that was...

HP Mini 2140 - I Get To Try One!

Blog Still no idea why, but at least it boots and I can run the UNR installation process. Unfortunately, it wouldn't boot UNR from a USB stick. On the negative side, having seen and worked with UNR and Moblin for a while now, I wouldn't want to give...

The Right Mouse for the Job

Blog I wrote recently about installing UNR on a very old Eee PC. I used a "standard" cordless mouse when I was loading UNR, and while that worked ok, the USB receiver is about the size of a typical "thumb drive", sticking out of the side of the netbook.

Ubuntu Netbook Remix "Acid Test" - First Results

Blog Comment I finally got around to trying UNR on my HP MINI. Good article Jamie. Got it installed to my 16gig stick and have ran it as live only, so far. The layout seems to be an acceptable alternative from a native KDE screen, everything self explanatory.

Ubuntu Netbook Remix "Acid Test" - First Results

Blog Comment I'll be very interested in hearing how it goes, if you decide to load UNR on the netbook and turn it over to your wife. What model of HP Mini is it, by the way?

Ubuntu 9.04 (Jaunty Jackalope) Final Release

Blog Comment I'll be very interested in hearing how your wife gets on with UNR, I've been wondering if it would be right on netbooks for some novices here. I have looked at it briefly on my HP Mini-Note, but besides the fact that the performance is intolerable...

HP Mini 2140 - Strongly Recommended!

Blog Once I got past the problem with the BIOS setup claiming that it had a Dual Core CPU, loading UNR 9.04 was easy. She finds the UNR desktop to be easy and intuitive to use. The HP Mini 2140 that I had ordered and configured for my friend has come...

Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic Koala) - Mixed Impressions

Blog My next few days will be spent looking at UNR 9.10 and the Kubuntu netbook release. I have also heard from a few people who have other problems, in particular with installing on an HP 2133 Mini-Note. I have installed Karmic on my Fujitsu S6510...

Ubuntu Netbook Remix - An Acid Test

Blog I initially booted it using UNR on a USB stick, and it came up beautifully. As we had no interest in preserving the existing operating system, and I wanted to keep things as simple as possible for her, I simply let it overwrite the entire disk with...

Ubuntu 9.04 'Jaunty Jackalope' Release Candidate

Blog Comment I've never tried the UNR on an Atom-based netbook, so I don't know what it is like when it works "properly". I have personally loaded it on both of our HP 2133 Mini-Notes, one with WXGA (1280x768) and one with WSVGA (1024x600).

Notes On the HP 2133 Mini-Note

Blog The most obvious place where this is visible is that the 2133 just can't run the Ubuntu Netbook Remix well at all, the 3D effects on the UNR desktop are painfully slow. I have gotten a query from another HP 2133 Mini-Note owner about my previous...

Moblin on the Nettop - First Steps

Blog I don't even find them to be much like the Ubuntu Netbook Remix - if anything, my first impression of the desktop is better than it was with UNR, I find it to be less cluttered and more intuitive. I've wanted to look at moblin for quite some time...

Fair is Fair - Ubuntu Netbook Remix

Blog Ok, so I realized that if I'm going to be fair about this, in addition to trying Moblin on the nettop, I really should try the Ubuntu Netbook Remix (UNR). So, I have downloaded the latest UNR 9.04 .img file, and copied it to a USB thumb drive.

Ubuntu Netbook Remix "Acid Test" - Wrap-Up

Blog Comment I had installed UNR on a 16 gig thumb drive, and tried it out on the hospital's wireless network, while visiting my wife. My netbook is an HP mini, 8.9" screen, web cam, microphone, 16 gig SSD, 1 gig memory, Atom processor.

Ubuntu 9.04 (Jaunty Jackalope) Final Release

Blog Comment If you are considering only Ubuntu releases, this is now quite easy, and I have done it a number of times - for example, this is how I have tried out UNR (Netbook Remix) several times. Of course, your target system has to have a BIOS which allows...

Fedora 11

Blog Although I have been mostly occupied with UNR and Moblin for the past week or two, I have managed to take a little time to look at the new Fedora release. I wasn't able to install it at all on my HP 2133 Mini-Note systems.

Ubuntu 9.04 (Jaunty Jackalope) Final Release

Blog I have not installed the Ubuntu Netbook Remix (UNR), because it has serious performance problems with the openchrome driver in my HP Mini-Note netbooks. A number of drivers have been updated - most interesting to me is that it has the latest...

Excellent Information

Talkback UNR seems to start from the assumption that the user is at least somewhat computer literate, and builds on known foundations. I had been very curious about Moblin, and you saved me from strugging to load it on my HP Mini-Note.
