An 'Outlook Killer' Is In Devlopment Over At OOo -- It Will Spell The Beginning Of The End Of Microsoft Office

An 'Outlook Killer' is in devlopment over at OOo -- it will spell the beginning of the end of Microsoft Office image Member Review OOo is actually very simple for even modestly experienced Microsoft Office users to learn quickly and easily and become productive. Also, OOo beat M$ to market with native XML document type support; it is only now becoming available with MS Office...

OOXML Interop Is Abysmal

Talkback The principle barrier is that the OOo page layout engines, as reflected in the ODF specification, have a far richer vocabulary than Microsoft Office. Moreover, there are only two plausible explanations for their not doing so: either ignorance or a...

It May Be A Little Rough Around The Edges Here And There, But Then Word's Not Much Better!

It may be a little rough around the edges here and there, but then Word's not much better! image Member Review The reliablity is now quite good, and for those who criticize OOo here I say since when were Microsoft programs reliable? OOo is quite a well rounded program. I use OOo all of the time, and I have to say it is easier to use.

OpenOffice Nears Download Milestone

Talkback I have seen statistics that shows that OOo allready have a greater market share than the latest version of MS Office and I guess that market share will increase as Microsoft releases Office-12 switching from some older MS-Office version to OOo 2.x...

Vienna Takes The Boldest Step Of All - Asking The Users

Leader They have a choice between Microsoft Office or OOo on Windows, or they can move to Linux and OOo. Rather than mandate a switch to Linux and OpenOffice.org (OOo), the department is letting the people decide.

Microsoft Admits Targeting Wine Users

Talkback and MS has gone to great lengths to not document the file format, so while that "piece of crap, OpenOffice[.org]" may open those PROPRIETARY Microsoft file formats 99% of the time, there's always that 1% where the formatting isn't right or OOo...

The Problems With Open Source

Talkback Also, Sun Microsystems, the host of the OOo codebase, offers StarOffice, which is OOo plus some added filters and templates. With CrossOver Office, you can even use Microsoft's office suite on Linux. OpenOffice.org (and it's Star of a bigger...

Not 1,500 Extensions

Talkback And the reason OOo uses extensions is Sun's unwilingness to get the extensions it uses added to the ODF spec. If we go by that criteria, many more documents are stored in HTML/CSS than in Microsoft Office binary formats, by many orders of magnitude.

00o Writes Compliant Files

Talkback
MS Office 2007 implementation of OOXML is may not 100% perfect which possibly starts those suggestions but it is a lot better and more complete than OOo which does not implement a number of ODF tags or does not implement them fully and...

Questions For The Community

Talkback
Here an example of why OOo does not comply with ODF spec: link
For the life of me, I can't see how this equates to “ OOo does not comply with the ODF specification”. I'm pretty sure Microsoft Office 2007 uses some are all of...

We're Still Using It After A Year, And Haven't A Complaint!

we're still using it after a year, and haven't a complaint! image Member Review We frequently receive Word and PowerPoint documents that we rarely have problems opening in OOo. We're a small office of 4 people and although we did purchase a full version of Microsoft Office (97! when it came time to upgrade we just couldn't...

ODF, The Big Picture

Talkback If the head developer of KDE's KOffice tells us that he can't exchange documents with OOo without risking loss of fidelity and/or content then it' s a serious fundamental problem. This allows them to legitimize a plan already in place via the...

Microsoft Trials Licence-checking Programme

Talkback I'll admit that OOo is a little klunky at times but linux is rock solid and beats the lederhosen off windows anytime of the day. I have to suffer the misfortune of using WinXP in the office and it is a bloody nightmare!

OpenOffice Denies Rift With Sun

Talkback OOo is becoming a lion on the desktop and threatens to cut into MS Office. If it cuts too much, then MS can't continue monopoly rents on MS Office, which in turn makes half of MS' profitable divisions unprofitable, bringing the whole company down a...

Microsoft: Office '10 Years Ahead' Of OpenOffice

Talkback I've been using OOo for about the last three years now, both at home, and have implimented it for my employees at the office. I finally flushed MS Office in favour of OOo. No, Microsoft, OOo is NOT ten years behind you.

Microsoft 'must Support OpenDocument'

Talkback Personally, I've been using OOo for years. As a result, I was using OOo constantly to, first, restore those documents to readable, and then, to edit them from beginning to end. Now, I'm using betas and DBs of OOo 2.0, and my MSO CDs are gathering...
