Why I've Moved From Vista To Ubuntu 7.10
Blog Comment So, since I have been playing around with linux distros for a while but never really got the feeling that they would convince me to switch and never look back, I took my laptop to the test and installed ubuntu 7.04 (feisty fawn).

Ubuntu On Fujitsu Lifebook S6510
Blog Having had so much success with Ubuntu on the older "test" laptop (Fujitsu-Siemens Lifebook S2110), and not expecting to want to try Vista on the newer Fujitsu Lifebook S6510 again anytime soon, I decided to try installing Ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy Heron...

OpenSUSE 11.0 First Impressions
Blog I do, however, think that these latest versions of either openSUSE or Ubuntu would be excellent alternatives for most ordinary PC users, including laptop users, and that is a huge step forward for Linux in my experience.

Maybe Vista Really Is Getting Better
Blog Performance is still not as good as Ubuntu or Mandriva on the same laptop, but even that still seems better than before. This laptop (Fujitsu Lifebook S6510) has the optional 1 GB of "TurboMemory", and I can guarantee you that the previous times I...

More Pleasant Surprises With Ubuntu
Blog With Ubuntu, I was very skeptical when I loaded it, I honestly expected to have it running for a day or so, just to see what worked and what didn't. As I continue to test and work with Ubuntu, I have come across a few more very pleasant surprises:

Blog Ubuntu is famed for its addiction to sudo, which is its attempt to get around the privileges paradox. There is one product that's worse than XP — and it's not Ubuntu, which does have its faults. The worst offender by far is Windows XP: for reasons...

Vista Versus The Gutsy Gibbon - Ubuntu 7.10
Blog Comment Before you do that (Automatix has been known to cause serious stability issues that people then go on to blame on Ubuntu), try one of the new features in Gutsy:" Ubuntu isn't perfect - in some areas, it's still lagging behind XP.

Vista Versus The Gutsy Gibbon - Ubuntu 7.10
Blog Comment Startup time of Vista, fresh start or from "Hibernation" is VERY fast (way faster than any (regular) Linux distribution, and I always know the latest Ubuntu and OpenSuSE releases). The first thing I did of course was turn almost all visual effects...

Vista Versus The Gutsy Gibbon - Ubuntu 7.10
Blog Of those seven, three run XP, one runs Ubuntu 6.06, two are now on Ubuntu 7.10, and one is Vista. Then how come I'm so much more at home with Ubuntu than Vista? Having used Ubuntu for the best part of a year, I'm a fan.

Why I've Moved From Vista To Ubuntu 7.10
Blog Ubuntu generally works just fine on my Santa Rosa laptop. No more, for two reasons: Vista, and Ubuntu 7.10 (ala Gutsy Gibbon). Ubuntu is fast, and is like a fresh breeze blowing through after my weeks of gazing at Vista, waiting for something to...

I Will Blog, Despite Vista's Best Efforts
Blog I could easily reboot into Ubuntu, and in fact was abot to so so, but something occurred to me. Until Microsoft truly gets that, I'll be sticking Ubuntu - or XP as a backup if I really need to run Windows.

PCLinuxOS 2008 Gnome On New Laptop.
Blog I first tried the latest version of Ubuntu, but it didn't find all the hardware and I've never been a real fan. I recently purchased a new Toshiba laptop. The clerk informed me that if I had to send it in for repair it had to be exactly as it stood...

Blog I loaded Ubuntu Linux on my test laptop a couple of weeks ago more or less on a lark, thinking I would just see for myself what the current state of the Linux world is today. If you have a laptop with slots for digital camera flash cards, Ubuntu...

Why I've Moved From Vista To Ubuntu 7.10
Blog Comment For the record, Ubuntu detected everything on my laptop and my scanner and digital camera and webcam all run fine too without any drivers that aren't already there in Linux. I tried Ubuntu 7.04 and it was like a rocket.

Blog Ubuntu's new shininess comes at a good time. It involves making a selection of live CDs - Puppy Linux is impressive in its simplicity and flexibility, while Ubuntu seems to "just work" - and giving them to my punters.
