Why I've Moved From Vista To Ubuntu 7.10

Blog Comment Ubuntu also runs faster, looks nicer than the new Vista Aero desktop, and uses FAR fewer resources. I did however get the games that were not running correctly under Vista to work fine under the WINE Windows Emulator included with Ubuntu!

Why I've Moved From Vista To Ubuntu 7.10

Blog Comment So, since I have been playing around with linux distros for a while but never really got the feeling that they would convince me to switch and never look back, I took my laptop to the test and installed ubuntu 7.04 (feisty fawn).

Why I've Moved From Vista To Ubuntu 7.10

Blog No more, for two reasons: Vista, and Ubuntu 7.10 (ala Gutsy Gibbon). Ubuntu is fast, and is like a fresh breeze blowing through after my weeks of gazing at Vista, waiting for something to happen. Funnily enough my colleague Rupert Goodwins...

Vista - Still Running And Stable After Six Weeks

Blog This blog entry is being written on Ubuntu, by the way.jw 21/9/2008 All of the problems and struggling with Vista did have one very positive result for me - it motivated me to go back and take another look at Linux for the desktop, and specifically...

OpenSUSE 11.0 First Impressions

Blog As I told my brother (who is still using XP, and has sworn not to touch Vista until Hell freezes over), in many cases the average user who is accustomed to Windows XP would have no more trouble changing to Linux (openSUSE or Ubuntu) than they...

Rupert Goodwins' Diary

Blog There is one product that's worse than XP — and it's not Ubuntu, which does have its faults. Ubuntu is famed for its addiction to sudo, which is its attempt to get around the privileges paradox. No, the real stinker is Vista, a recent beta of which...

Vista Versus The Gutsy Gibbon - Ubuntu 7.10

Blog Comment Before you do that (Automatix has been known to cause serious stability issues that people then go on to blame on Ubuntu), try one of the new features in Gutsy:" Ubuntu isn't perfect - in some areas, it's still lagging behind XP.

Vista Versus The Gutsy Gibbon - Ubuntu 7.10

Blog Of those seven, three run XP, one runs Ubuntu 6.06, two are now on Ubuntu 7.10, and one is Vista. Then how come I'm so much more at home with Ubuntu than Vista? There, the computer has two partitions, and for historical reasons the ubuntu system...

An Impressive Week With Ubuntu

Blog Comment If Ubuntu, or any other flavor of Linux, wants to make any serious headway in the general market against Windows, it has to be plug-and-play for all of the common hardware and peripherals. That is one reason I am so impressed with this release of...

PCLinuxOS 2008 Gnome On New Laptop.

Blog I first tried the latest version of Ubuntu, but it didn't find all the hardware and I've never been a real fan. I played with VISTA for 2 days and was so frustrated with trying to find items, the annoying UAC, plus it wouldn't run some of my games...

Maybe Vista Really Is Getting Better

Blog Performance is still not as good as Ubuntu or Mandriva on the same laptop, but even that still seems better than before. I am still primarily using Linux, and only run Windows during my morning and evening commute, but I will at least continue to...

Vista Versus The Gutsy Gibbon - Ubuntu 7.10

Blog Comment Startup time of Vista, fresh start or from "Hibernation" is VERY fast (way faster than any (regular) Linux distribution, and I always know the latest Ubuntu and OpenSuSE releases). I'm running Linux (OpenSuSE 10.3 in my case) in a VMware virtual...

A Challenge To All Linux Users In The World

Blog Comment I understand what you are proposing, and before I question its validity or usefulness let me suggest Ubuntu Server as an out-of-the-box, under 500MB download solution to what you seek. Given the user-orientation of desktop Ubuntu and its...

Gartner: Ignore Vista Until 2008

Talkback Currently I'm trying (and liking) the Debian-based (K)Ubuntu (free of charge, tons of software. See http://www.ubuntu.com/). I think that Vista will be to XP what ME was to 98SE: more eyecandy while functionality is not much increased (DRM anyone?

Can Linux Replace Windows - Maybe!

Blog In fact as I said to my brother yesterday evening, a typical Windows XP user could probably switch to Ubuntu or Mandriva Linux more easily today than they can switch to Vista. I loaded Ubuntu Linux on my test laptop a couple of weeks ago more or...

Wireless Networking - Linksys WRT350N And Intel 4965AGN

Blog But now I have found that it will also not connect when I am running Ubuntu, Mandriva or Fedora Linux. When I am running Windows Vista Business, it won't connect. I assumed that this was just some sort of weird Vista bug, of course.

Vista Versus The Gutsy Gibbon - Ubuntu 7.10

Blog Comment Well, in the true Linux spirit of being helpful to other Linux users, I would recommend that you install Automatix as soon as you have finished installing your (K)ubuntu distro. It really helps a lot to make Linux do what you expected fromm an out...

Rupert Goodwins' Diary

Blog It involves making a selection of live CDs - Puppy Linux is impressive in its simplicity and flexibility, while Ubuntu seems to "just work" - and giving them to my punters. Ubuntu's new shininess comes at a good time.

Why I've Moved From Vista To Ubuntu 7.10

Blog Comment For the record, Ubuntu detected everything on my laptop and my scanner and digital camera and webcam all run fine too without any drivers that aren't already there in Linux. I tried Ubuntu 7.04 and it was like a rocket.
