New Directions - Ubuntu
Blog Since I always do this sort of thing by swapping disks, and I have a disk for that laptop which I had previously loaded with Vista Home Premium (and given up on, even before I got the S6510), I could reclaim that disk for Ubuntu and my XP Pro disk...

I Will Blog, Despite Vista's Best Efforts
Blog I could easily reboot into Ubuntu, and in fact was abot to so so, but something occurred to me. Until Microsoft truly gets that, I'll be sticking Ubuntu - or XP as a backup if I really need to run Windows.

Why I've Moved From Vista To Ubuntu 7.10
Blog Ubuntu generally works just fine on my Santa Rosa laptop. No more, for two reasons: Vista, and Ubuntu 7.10 (ala Gutsy Gibbon). Ubuntu is fast, and is like a fresh breeze blowing through after my weeks of gazing at Vista, waiting for something to...

OpenSUSE 11.0 First Impressions
Blog I do, however, think that these latest versions of either openSUSE or Ubuntu would be excellent alternatives for most ordinary PC users, including laptop users, and that is a huge step forward for Linux in my experience.

New Debian GNU/Linux Update
Blog I would then have one disk for my S6510 laptop that triple-boots XP Professional, Ubuntu and Mandriva, and another that dual-boots Vista and Debian. The first piece of good news is that it seems to understand the Mobile Intel 965 display adapter...

Vista Versus The Gutsy Gibbon - Ubuntu 7.10
Blog Comment Before you do that (Automatix has been known to cause serious stability issues that people then go on to blame on Ubuntu), try one of the new features in Gutsy:" Ubuntu isn't perfect - in some areas, it's still lagging behind XP.

Windows Vista - Here I Go Again!
Blog Comment It comes to something when my wee Eee running a much-hacked-about Ubuntu consistently beats an expensivo Sony with Vista. Ah, now, I just tried to run Skype on my VIsta laptop and it didn't want to know about the webcam.

Why I've Moved From Vista To Ubuntu 7.10
Blog Comment There is probably one other thing, after vista has booted a few times it tries to get itself sorted, whenever you aren't using the cpu or ram you aren't using, its usually looking at it self, seeing what it can do to speed up, in fact after a...

Gartner: Ignore Vista Until 2008
Talkback I download the Live DVD Suse Linux 9, Live CD's from Ubuntu and Mepis and tried on my desktops and laptop and was very impressed with their compatability and ease of use. But, I think home users should only buy it if they buy a brand new computer...

Vista Vs Ubuntu: This Time, It's Virtual
Blog So I decided to put Ubuntu on the Vista dual-core Centrino laptop. I've been meaning to try VirtualBox, the free x86 virtualisation product from InnoTek, and a comment to my previous Vista/Ubuntu post has pushed me into it.

Vista Versus The Gutsy Gibbon - Ubuntu 7.10
Blog Comment Startup time of Vista, fresh start or from "Hibernation" is VERY fast (way faster than any (regular) Linux distribution, and I always know the latest Ubuntu and OpenSuSE releases). The first thing I did of course was turn almost all visual effects...

Open Office To The Rescue
Blog I gave them the Lifebook S2110, running Ubuntu and OpenOffice.org, and they worked perfectly happily on it all evening. I was just working with Vista booted on my laptop (running one of the few remaining programs I have that requires Vista), when I...

Vista Versus The Gutsy Gibbon - Ubuntu 7.10
Blog Of those seven, three run XP, one runs Ubuntu 6.06, two are now on Ubuntu 7.10, and one is Vista. Then how come I'm so much more at home with Ubuntu than Vista? Having used Ubuntu for the best part of a year, I'm a fan.

Looking Forward To Trying Fiesty Out!
Talkback I recently bought a new laptop, and have been using Ubuntu on it since day one, with great success. I've recently been sent the free Windows Vista upgrade disk. I can do everything I want, and just run windows under VM Ware to sync my PDA.

Heron's Not So Hardy After All
Blog Comment I'm a big fan of open source, and Ubuntu in particular. Since 6.06 (which my home server runs, currently at 173 days uptime on a rather ancient Compaq laptop), each new version has been better than before and easier to recommend to people.

Rupert Goodwins' Diary
Blog A healthier attitude would be to ignore it, and an even healthier one would be to move on to other software — having used Ubuntu for a month or so on a spare laptop, I'm going to make my main machine dual boot with the eventual aim of relegating...

Rupert Goodwins' Diary
Blog Ubuntu's new shininess comes at a good time. It involves making a selection of live CDs - Puppy Linux is impressive in its simplicity and flexibility, while Ubuntu seems to "just work" - and giving them to my punters.

Vista Versus The Gutsy Gibbon - Ubuntu 7.10

Ubuntu Intrepid Ibex Alpha 6 - Good News For Laptop Users
Blog Comment Good-bye Vista, hello Ibex. New installs of xorg use xrandr not Xinerama anymore. My desktop has 4 monitors and is 5120x1024. Xrandr has a nasty size limit of about half that size so I could not use Gutsy or Hardy on my desktop system, Hydra.
