Ubuntu On Fujitsu Lifebook S6510

Blog Having had so much success with Ubuntu on the older "test" laptop (Fujitsu-Siemens Lifebook S2110), and not expecting to want to try Vista on the newer Fujitsu Lifebook S6510 again anytime soon, I decided to try installing Ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy Heron...

Why I've Moved From Vista To Ubuntu 7.10

Blog Ubuntu is fast, and is like a fresh breeze blowing through after my weeks of gazing at Vista, waiting for something to happen. No more, for two reasons: Vista, and Ubuntu 7.10 (ala Gutsy Gibbon). Funnily enough my colleague Rupert Goodwins...

Why I've Moved From Vista To Ubuntu 7.10

Blog Comment So, since I have been playing around with linux distros for a while but never really got the feeling that they would convince me to switch and never look back, I took my laptop to the test and installed ubuntu 7.04 (feisty fawn).

Surveys Show Vista Struggling One Year On

News To be sure, desktop systems based on free software are coming along nicely," said analyst Glyn Moody, of Open .not least because people like [Canonical, the makers of Ubuntu] are working hard on making the user experience as good as Windows.

Why I've Moved From Vista To Ubuntu 7.10

Blog Comment Ubuntu also runs faster, looks nicer than the new Vista Aero desktop, and uses FAR fewer resources. I did however get the games that were not running correctly under Vista to work fine under the WINE Windows Emulator included with Ubuntu!

Vista Versus The Gutsy Gibbon - Ubuntu 7.10

Blog Comment Bring up the Adept Manager in Ubuntu. Running Vista is like being in a candy store that only sells black liquorice (I _hate_ black liquorice) at exorbitant prices. Microsoft's now promoting Vista with a campaign called "100 reasons why everyone's...

Why I've Moved From Vista To Ubuntu 7.10

Blog Comment I tried Ubuntu 7.04 and it was like a rocket. I am now using Ubuntu 7.10 and will never go back to any Windows. For the record, Ubuntu detected everything on my laptop and my scanner and digital camera and webcam all run fine too without any...

Microsoft's Mojave Just A Desert Vista

Blog To some extent, that's because once you've got people on a stable system they understand you leave them there - I'm not going to get my XP'd parents onto Ubuntu either - but it's an indication of how little Microsoft understands the market it...

Vista Versus The Gutsy Gibbon - Ubuntu 7.10

Blog Of those seven, three run XP, one runs Ubuntu 6.06, two are now on Ubuntu 7.10, and one is Vista. Then how come I'm so much more at home with Ubuntu than Vista? There, the computer has two partitions, and for historical reasons the ubuntu system...

Talkback http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/gutsy/release/ubuntu-7.10-dvd-i386.iso Personally if I was setting up my company from scratch - I'd use Ubuntu, why would anyone on a tight budget risk installing/using pirated software, or spending £300-500 of...

Desktop Linux For Small Business review

Reviews If you prefer to deal with a consultancy-like support service, then Novell Linux Desktop 9, may be a good move, while the very corporate Red Hat Desktop 4, could prove a sensible option for companies with large numbers of desktops. Our Editor's...

Forrester: IT Managers Delaying Vista Rollout

News When it comes to Windows Vista, Microsoft's biggest competitor isn't Apple, Novell, Red Hat or Ubuntu [just to name a few] — it's Microsoft itself," Gray wrote. That said, Forrester notes in the first line of its report that it's not like most...

Why I've Moved From Vista To Ubuntu 7.10

Blog Comment There is probably one other thing, after vista has booted a few times it tries to get itself sorted, whenever you aren't using the cpu or ram you aren't using, its usually looking at it self, seeing what it can do to speed up, in fact after a...

Why I've Moved From Vista To Ubuntu 7.10

Blog Comment It is not necessary to make up BS about Vista just to make Ubuntu look good. Ubuntu has real merits. Overall, the system is a pleasure to use, and this takes absolutely NOTHING away from the goodness of Ubuntu and Mac OS X.

Nubuntu? Schmubuntu!

Blog Comment Seriously, there are so many programs that ship with ubuntu that are far better than notepad++ with no configuration necessary (emacs for instance). This article confuses me because I have been using ubuntu for over six months now without the need...

OpenSUSE 11.0 First Impressions

Blog As I told my brother (who is still using XP, and has sworn not to touch Vista until Hell freezes over), in many cases the average user who is accustomed to Windows XP would have no more trouble changing to Linux (openSUSE or Ubuntu) than they...

Dell Inspiron Mini 12 Muscles In On Notebook Turf

Rupert Goodwins' Diary

Blog There is one product that's worse than XP — and it's not Ubuntu, which does have its faults. Ubuntu is famed for its addiction to sudo, which is its attempt to get around the privileges paradox. No, the real stinker is Vista, a recent beta of which...

Zattoo Puts Live TV On The Desktop

Blog It works, too - I know I shouldn't be surprised when something like this just loads and runs under Ubuntu, but it did and I was. Zattoo is a free live streaming TV service which, like so many, has its own client (Mac, Linux, XP and Vista) and does...

Shame...

Talkback Likewise, their incredibly limited range of machines featuring Ubuntu isn't as impressive as I'd have hoped - and considering they have a "free" OS on them, they're pretty pricey. .that part of the cost of the laptop is the Vista install.
