Blog Comment So, since I have been playing around with linux distros for a while but never really got the feeling that they would convince me to switch and never look back, I took my laptop to the test and installed ubuntu 7.04 (feisty fawn).

Ubuntu On Fujitsu Lifebook S6510

Blog Having had so much success with Ubuntu on the older "test" laptop (Fujitsu-Siemens Lifebook S2110), and not expecting to want to try Vista on the newer Fujitsu Lifebook S6510 again anytime soon, I decided to try installing Ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy Heron...

Why I've Moved From Vista To Ubuntu 7.10

Blog Comment For the record, Ubuntu detected everything on my laptop and my scanner and digital camera and webcam all run fine too without any drivers that aren't already there in Linux. I am now using Ubuntu 7.10 and will never go back to any Windows.

Monolithic OS Upgrades Are So Over

Blog I am also waiting to get my hands on Ubuntu 7.10 to see how it deals with Centrino Pro and the other new bits of technology on my particular laptop that may make for some interesting driver hunts. But if I can find all the drivers I need for Ubuntu...

Vista Vs Ubuntu: This Time, It's Virtual

Blog So I decided to put Ubuntu on the Vista dual-core Centrino laptop. Of course, I can't just put a Windows OS on my Ubuntu machinery - don't have an unused Genuine Windows Advantage XP or Vista, and to reuse anything would be against the licence.

Can Linux Replace Windows - Maybe!

Blog I loaded Ubuntu Linux on my test laptop a couple of weeks ago more or less on a lark, thinking I would just see for myself what the current state of the Linux world is today. If you have a laptop with slots for digital camera flash cards, Ubuntu...

More Pleasant Surprises With Ubuntu

Blog The Citrix Presentation Server Client is definitely much more stable on Ubuntu than it is on Windows. If all of that works, I'll keep Ubuntu on that one, and swap the S2110 back to the Windows XP Pro disk.jw 3/6/2008

OpenSUSE 11.0 First Impressions

Blog I do, however, think that these latest versions of either openSUSE or Ubuntu would be excellent alternatives for most ordinary PC users, including laptop users, and that is a huge step forward for Linux in my experience.

Vista Versus The Gutsy Gibbon - Ubuntu 7.10

Blog Of those seven, three run XP, one runs Ubuntu 6.06, two are now on Ubuntu 7.10, and one is Vista. Then how come I'm so much more at home with Ubuntu than Vista? Then there's the work Ubuntu computer, on which I do just about everything when I'm in...

Wireless Networking - Linksys WRT350N And Intel 4965AGN

Blog But now I have found that it will also not connect when I am running Ubuntu, Mandriva or Fedora Linux. When I am running Windows XP Professional on the laptop, it connects to the Linksys router just fine.

Rupert Goodwins' Diary

Blog A healthier attitude would be to ignore it, and an even healthier one would be to move on to other software — having used Ubuntu for a month or so on a spare laptop, I'm going to make my main machine dual boot with the eventual aim of relegating...

PCLinuxOS 2008 Gnome On New Laptop.

Blog I first tried the latest version of Ubuntu, but it didn't find all the hardware and I've never been a real fan. I recently purchased a new Toshiba laptop. It came pre-installed with VISTA, and I inquired about buying with the OS removed.

Apple's Leopard Lasts '30 Seconds' In Hack Contest

News Competitors in the hacking race were allowed to choose either a Sony laptop running Ubuntu 7.10, a Fujitsu laptop running Vista Ultimate SP1 or a MacBook Air running OS X 10.5.2. Apple's Leopard has been hacked within 30 seconds using a flaw in...

Dual-Boot Ubuntu And Windows XP Professional

Blog I kept my "primary" Windows XP disk intact, by using a second disk drive which I had previously used to test Vista and Ubuntu on that system. But that one is actually able to run Vista (more or less), so I would like to set it up with partitions...

Why I've Moved From Vista To Ubuntu 7.10

Blog Comment There is probably one other thing, after vista has booted a few times it tries to get itself sorted, whenever you aren't using the cpu or ram you aren't using, its usually looking at it self, seeing what it can do to speed up, in fact after a...

Why I've Moved From Vista To Ubuntu 7.10

Blog Ubuntu generally works just fine on my Santa Rosa laptop. No more, for two reasons: Vista, and Ubuntu 7.10 (ala Gutsy Gibbon). Ubuntu is fast, and is like a fresh breeze blowing through after my weeks of gazing at Vista, waiting for something to...

A Challenge To All Linux Users In The World

Blog Comment Take Ubuntu Studio out for a spin, then sit down and calculate what it would take - and go ahead, plot availability and functionality - of duplicating that warehouse of wank-o-rific wonder in Windows.

Rupert Goodwins' Diary

Blog Ubuntu is famed for its addiction to sudo, which is its attempt to get around the privileges paradox. There is one product that's worse than XP — and it's not Ubuntu, which does have its faults. The worst offender by far is Windows XP: for reasons...

Blog Ubuntu's new shininess comes at a good time. It involves making a selection of live CDs - Puppy Linux is impressive in its simplicity and flexibility, while Ubuntu seems to "just work" - and giving them to my punters.
