Windows Vista - Here I Go Again!

Blog First, installing the Vista updates which were released while I was running XP; then a couple of driver updates. So, after reading all of the recent posts about Vista SP1 being available "Real Soon Now" (which made me aware that there are some...

Vista Vs Ubuntu: This Time, It's Virtual

Blog Of course, I can't just put a Windows OS on my Ubuntu machinery - don't have an unused Genuine Windows Advantage XP or Vista, and to reuse anything would be against the licence. Haven't had time to do any performance testing, but subjectively...

2008-01-06. Vista Is A Downgrade. Part 4.

Talkback There's one good thing with Vista though: When I installed my VPN for work I used something akin to a Wizzard that was able to connect me almost immediatly and effortlessly whereas in XP I had to go into advanced settings of the TCP/IP entry of...

Windows 7 On The Apricot Netbook

Blog Anyway, the last thing I wrote about the Apricot netbook was that it was no longer available with SUSE Linux, with the "manufacturers" plumping for Windows XP instead. I haven't tried sticking Vista on the Apricot PicoBook Pro - I'm fairly...

OS Scratch Load Times

Blog Once the "Run Once" utility is done, I have to remove a couple of Fujitsu devices and drivers which block Vista SP1 from installing, then I can turn Windows Update loose on it. The same is generally true with Windows XP.

I Will Blog, Despite Vista's Best Efforts

Blog I had several thoughts that I imagined might be interesting to share: about how, despite all the advances that have generated all the product upgrades from the 'Wintel' duopoly, I have this week discovered that an eight-year old Toshiba laptop...

Marketing Mush

Blog I was a little dismayed to see that they think the best way to use Windows (any version back to and including XP) is to have the system come up from "sleep" mode. Currently DebbieToo (a Celeron) and SugarBear (a P3) both boot up faster than Windows...

Windows XP Embedded Standard 2009 CTP#1 & CTP#2

Blog them that Windows XP Embedded was finally going to get IE7 in component form, the MS marketing nimrods got into the mix and decided to change the name of the product AND take the previously promised but canceled FP2008 and turn it into Windows XP...

Laptop Review - Fujitsu Lifebook S6510

Blog Although the system came preloaded with Windows Vista Business, the recovery media included both Vista and XP Pro disks, and there was a page included titled "Downgrade Rights for Microsoft Windows Vista Business" which states that the owner has...

2008-01-06 Vista Is An Upgrade - Part 2

Talkback Vista does NOT improve on XP ! There is a whopping load of programs I used to run on a regular basis under XP that no longer work on Vista. Also, everytime I end up in a folder Vista displays a bunch of Columns that I DON'T NEED!

Microsoft Security Chief Looks Beyond Vista

News For Fathi, the changing of the guard is a perfect time to start looking beyond Windows Vista, the yet-to-be-released successor to Windows XP. The next step, and we've done some of this in Vista, is adding things like certificate lifecycle...

Microsoft: Don't Sell PCs Without Operating Systems

Talkback I've already come to the conclusion that I want nothing to do with Windows Vista - whenever the hell that's coming out - and IE 7 is ugly and amatuerish at best. I've been reasonably satisfied with Windows XP, but with the attitude MS keeps...

XP Never Forced Me To Do That

Blog Well, I've installed Vista now, and the hell of having to reinstall XP and then its successor is fading from memory. Panicking, I did the only thing I could - something I've never had to do with XP, in no circumstances.

2008-01-06 Vista Is A Downgrade.

Talkback Don't *need* another newer version of Windows, such as Vista. The title bar of every window now looks 1.5 times the height that it was under XP and I can't change it. But with Vista? XP works perfectly totally fine.

A Tale Of Two Vista Systems

Blog I've upgraded two systems to Windows Vista over the past few months, with vastly different results. This ran Windows XP perfectly happily, and became a favourite for its light weight, useful docking base and exemplary build quality.

Vista Memory Leak?

Blog I've been running Vista Business on my Lifebook S6510 for several weeks now, and overall I'm pleased - at least pleased enough to keep it this time, rather than retreating to XP Pro again. I'm wondering if anyone else has seen anything that looks...

XP SP3 Is Sick Puppy 3, Stupid Patchwork 3, Stupendous Pain-in-the-A__ 3

Blog Worker droid status in the Zombie armies of the Internet is the ultimate fate of all of the 500 to 600 desktop Windows XP computers we use in the oilfield rental fleet. To build the image we will deploy into the rental fleet, we'll take our XP SP1...

Vista Versus The Gutsy Gibbon - Ubuntu 7.10

Blog Of those seven, three run XP, one runs Ubuntu 6.06, two are now on Ubuntu 7.10, and one is Vista. That wouldn't be so frustrating, if Vista wasn't so like XP in so many ways that the changes are so obviously change for change's sake.

Acer One Runs Vista! But Not For Long.

Blog I've been doing some work for a reseller of late and one of the items that I came across was a 4 gb Acer one net book with an install of vista running. Great I thought to myself, lets get XP pro on the thing and we'll be flying along.
