Windows Vista - Here I Go Again!

Blog So, after reading all of the recent posts about Vista SP1 being available "Real Soon Now" (which made me aware that there are some Vista updates that must be installed before SP1 will install), and reading David Long's good article about...

Vista Vs Ubuntu: This Time, It's Virtual

Blog Of course, I can't just put a Windows OS on my Ubuntu machinery - don't have an unused Genuine Windows Advantage XP or Vista, and to reuse anything would be against the licence. I've been meaning to try VirtualBox, the free x86 virtualisation...

2008-01-06. Vista Is A Downgrade. Part 4.

Talkback There's one good thing with Vista though: When I installed my VPN for work I used something akin to a Wizzard that was able to connect me almost immediatly and effortlessly whereas in XP I had to go into advanced settings of the TCP/IP entry of...

I Will Blog, Despite Vista's Best Efforts

Blog I had several thoughts that I imagined might be interesting to share: about how, despite all the advances that have generated all the product upgrades from the 'Wintel' duopoly, I have this week discovered that an eight-year old Toshiba laptop...

Marketing Mush

Blog I was a little dismayed to see that they think the best way to use Windows (any version back to and including XP) is to have the system come up from "sleep" mode. However, taking the blogs at face value, I'm glad that they seem to be interested in...

Windows XP Embedded Standard 2009 CTP#1 & CTP#2

Blog them that Windows XP Embedded was finally going to get IE7 in component form, the MS marketing nimrods got into the mix and decided to change the name of the product AND take the previously promised but canceled FP2008 and turn it into Windows XP...

Laptop Review - Fujitsu Lifebook S6510

Blog Although the system came preloaded with Windows Vista Business, the recovery media included both Vista and XP Pro disks, and there was a page included titled "Downgrade Rights for Microsoft Windows Vista Business" which states that the owner has...

2008-01-06 Vista Is An Upgrade - Part 2

Talkback There is a whopping load of programs I used to run on a regular basis under XP that no longer work on Vista. Vista does NOT improve on XP ! I'm trying to give real life examples of totally absurd, crazy, useless meaningless stuff that Vista is...

Microsoft Security Chief Looks Beyond Vista

News For Fathi, the changing of the guard is a perfect time to start looking beyond Windows Vista, the yet-to-be-released successor to Windows XP. I'm going to continue the road that Mike and the team had started on and improve our security post-Vista...

Microsoft: Don't Sell PCs Without Operating Systems

Talkback I've already come to the conclusion that I want nothing to do with Windows Vista - whenever the hell that's coming out - and IE 7 is ugly and amatuerish at best. I've been reasonably satisfied with Windows XP, but with the attitude MS keeps...

XP Never Forced Me To Do That

Blog Well, I've installed Vista now, and the hell of having to reinstall XP and then its successor is fading from memory. Panicking, I did the only thing I could - something I've never had to do with XP, in no circumstances.

2008-01-06 Vista Is A Downgrade.

Talkback Don't *need* another newer version of Windows, such as Vista. Not only is it not the status quo when compared to XP but it actually is WORSE ! The title bar of every window now looks 1.5 times the height that it was under XP and I can't change it.

A Tale Of Two Vista Systems

Blog I've upgraded two systems to Windows Vista over the past few months, with vastly different results. In fact, this beast barely draws breath running Vista, so I'm planning to install VMware and run a whole bunch of OSs, just for fun.

Vista Memory Leak?

Blog I've been running Vista Business on my Lifebook S6510 for several weeks now, and overall I'm pleased - at least pleased enough to keep it this time, rather than retreating to XP Pro again. I'm wondering if anyone else has seen anything that looks...

XP SP3 Is Sick Puppy 3, Stupid Patchwork 3, Stupendous Pain-in-the-A__ 3

Blog Worker droid status in the Zombie armies of the Internet is the ultimate fate of all of the 500 to 600 desktop Windows XP computers we use in the oilfield rental fleet. I will NOT however recommend to management that we need to go to Vista.

Vista Versus The Gutsy Gibbon - Ubuntu 7.10

Blog Of those seven, three run XP, one runs Ubuntu 6.06, two are now on Ubuntu 7.10, and one is Vista. That wouldn't be so frustrating, if Vista wasn't so like XP in so many ways that the changes are so obviously change for change's sake.

Apple Mac OS X On X86: A First Test

Talkback New Intel Apple macs (iBook, Powerbooks, iMacs, Mac minis etc.need* to support dual boot to Windows XP/Vista. Yeah, that would explain why Windows Vista Beta 1 picked up my Soundblaster 16 on the ISA slot (I have a ISA bridge because it's a new...

Windows Chief Fields Readers' Questions

News Interestingly, even though XP will be five years old by the time Vista ships (currently scheduled for the end of this year) the questions posted by many readers indicated that they need to be convinced that Vista will be a necessary upgrade.
