Merge So We Can Diverge, and Suppress Innovation?
Ok, let me make sure that I understand the logic in this:
The way forward, is converge all the forked versions of Linux
...
have (like MS) different flavours, but simplified, Netbook Lite version, Desktop version and Server (Ent) version
Uh, ok. We need to get rid of all those messy different versions, so that we can create, uh, different versions? Right.
standardise the Desktop. Merge Gnome/KDE and create one standard OS platform
Who gets to decide what the "one true standard O/S" is? Microsoft? Apple? IBM? Can we take a vote on it?
Where is the development effort for the "flavors" supposed to come from? It presumably has to be "blessed" by the keepers of the "one true O/S", but for just one example, Microsoft has proven again and again that they are incapable of developing a competitive and acceptable operating system for small/mobile devices, whether they call it "Windows CE" or "Windows Mobile" or whatever the next incarnation turns out to be.
When it turns out that the provider of that "one standard O/S" has made a massive mistake (most recently called "Vista"), what do we do when there are no alternatives?
